The offer is good online and in Barnes & Noble stores, though pre-owned Nook devices are not eligible. The store will email the $50 gift card to the account holder before Aug. 6.
An 8GB Nook Tablet sells for $199 but does not include the $50 gift card offer.
Barnes & Noble unveiled the tablet in November. It features a 7-inch screen, 1GB of built-in RAM, and a 1-GHz TI OMAP4 dual-core processor. The store promises up to 11.5 hours of reading time or nine hours of video. The 16GB of on-board storage is expandable up to 32GB, and data can be stored via Nook Cloud, too.
The promotion is perhaps a way for Barnes & Noble to clear out its existing tablet inventory. According to CNET, the retailer is prepping an updated Nook Tablet that will feature a "revolutionary screen technology." What that actually means was not disclosed, but the source cited by CNET said the technology was an in-house project.
Barnes & Noble rival Amazon is also reportedly set to introduce a revamped Kindle Fire 2 tablet in the near future, while Apple is rumored to have a 7.85-inch iPad in the works. Google's Nexus 7, another 7-inch tablet, is also now shipping to customers.
In April, Barnes & Noble and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership whereby the software giant invested $300 million in the retailer's Nook business for a 17.6 percent stake. The deal also meant the two firms settled their patent dispute.
CNET speculated that the new Nook might incorporate Microsoft, like an Xbox app, but said the Nook will remain an Android device and not switch to Windows 8.
